The technique of portraying flesh with such substantial materiality calls to mind another artist much admired by Freud- Courbet. 'I am really interested in people as animals', the artist has confessed; and here he plays the coarse physicality of the figure against the convoluted curves of the paint-stained rags to devastating effect.
