Campbell chooses to create his 'living tableaux' in an academic style which allows an immediate accessibility to the viewer but does not necessarily fully explain his work.

His pictures may be seen as belonging to the same genre as the work of Bruce McLean or Gilbert and George, where tense situations create the basis of the work's appeal.
