Keith Vaughan bought a weekend cottage in Essex in 1964 and used it until his death.

He painted many landscapes in the area and was particularly attracted to the effect of fires against dark skies, as seen in Burning Fields. The painting now joins The Fry Art Gallery, which collects work by artists who have lived or worked in North West Essex, as the first work by Vaughan.
