The Judgement of Paris is a beautifully composed genre painting of a family scene in a cottage at Newlyn, Cornwall.

The Judgement of Paris is a beautifully composed genre painting of a family scene in a cottage at Newlyn, Cornwall. Frank Bourdillon was born in India and began his career as a coffee planter. He later left India and trained as an artist at the Slade School of Art in London and in Paris. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886 and moved to Newlyn in 1887. The Judgement of Paris is the first picture Bourdillon painted in Newlyn and in its subject matter and square-brush technique it clearly displays the influence of the Newlyn School of artists. The Judgement of Paris
now joins the collection at Penlee House, a gallery which aims to preserve, display and interpret works of art depicting the far west of Cornwall.
