John Varley exhibited this, his first watercolour – a painting of Peterborough Cathedral – at the Royal Academy at the age of 20.

His subsequent works represent the transition between topographical drawing and the bolder manner of watercolour painting that is characteristic of the 19th century. This sketch went on to inspire the 1837 watercolour purchased in 2012 with assistance from the Art Fund.
