The primitive-looking Biblical figures in this drypoint print reflect Max BeckmannÂ’s dark experience as a medical orderly in the First World War.

It is now regarded as a key image of his period of mental breakdown. Beckmann was later declared a ‘degenerate artist’ by the Nazi regime and emigrated first to Holland, and later to the USA.
