A 14th-century Sienese master, Pietro Lorenzetti showed a concern with naturalism and illusionism that was a century ahead of his time. The belt-wrapped scabbard held by Saint Paul, who stands to Christ's right, is depicted with a realism more typical of Renaissance art. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
