Adrian Piper is a Black artist who makes political, issue based work that comments on a variety of themes within race and gender and the politics of representation.

The Hypothesis series marked the moment of transition in PiperÂ’s work from first-generation Conceptual Art to performance. The Hypothesis series acknowledges the subjective character of human perception, by charting and documenting an individual navigation through space and time as a moving or stationary object. Piper was also one of the first artists to engage with popular culture, in particular African-American culture, through an investigation of the clichés and preconceptions about it. This work was presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
