This beautiful little drawing with great depth of colour, depicts a group of birch trees with their silver trunks gleaming against the green of the wood beyond.

The pattern formed by the broad leaves of a plant in the foreground is characteristic of Crome's work. The drawing is of particular importance as it bears the signature 'J. Crome', probably the only instance of an authentic signature on one of the works of the artist who founded the Norwich School of Painting.
