Siena by Ben Nicholson

Although better known as a sculptor or painter than as a printmaker, Nicholson dedicated a great deal of time and effort into developing a particular approach to semi-abstract printmaking.

Etching, drypoint & burnisher
43.6 x 37.7 cm
Art Fund grant:
£2,000 ( Total: £6,000)
Acquired in:
Alan Cristea Gallery

This print was made following a trip to Tuscany and shows the elaborate experimental character of Nicholson’s prints with his search for the right inking and the balance of shadows. There are few prints in which Nicholson’s working process and the input of the printer are so clearly visible. This print therefore provides a nearly unique insight into the artist’s approach to printmaking.
