Palmer spent a month near Aylesbury in 1845 and produced at least four watercolours from his sketches including this one, which is the first Palmer to be acquired by Buckinghamshire County Museum.

This work demonstrates Palmer's admiration for Thomas Gainsborough through the greater freedom of brushstrokes. It appears to have been inspired by 'The Market Cart' by Gainsborough in the National Gallery.

Provenance

Samuel Palmer; Alfred Herbert Palmer, 1909; private collection, 1973; M Barclay, 1996; private collection, 2007; Lowell Libson. The work has been vetted by the Art Loss Register and LSAD.
