Why was St Mary’s Church shot by muskets and canons in the English Civil War?
Presenting a workshop on understanding the role of the church during the English Civil War and learning how to spot and collect evidence of a musket scar.
Discover the truth behind the stories and learn how to recognise impact scars, how these are assessed and learn the differences between the shot marks and natural processes that produce similar marks. This is a unique opportunity to learn about an aspect of the civil war and learn how to assess bullet scars using gauges. This workshop is also useful for anyone interested in the history and architecture of church buildings, particularly if bullet scars are suspected on other churches. Starting in the museum with a background talk and practice, before going out to the church and putting your new skills to the test.
This workshop is part of Heritage Open Days.
