Evening Reception at The Hepworth Wakefield
Private View | The Hepworth Wakefield Gallery
Thursday 9 June 2011 - 18:30 until 20:30
Yorkshire’s inspiring new art gallery, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, celebrates the area’s unique artistic legacy and features major pieces of historic and modern art. With ten gallery spaces, making it one of the UK’s largest purpose-built galleries outside of London, The Hepworth Wakefield boasts a display of more than 40 little-known sculptures by Barbara Hepworth that provide a unique insight into her working methods and creativity (gifted by the Hepworth Estate through the Art Fund), as well as works by her contemporaries including Constantin Brancusi, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson and Graham Sutherland. There are a number of temporary exhibition galleries, which will house loans from the gallery’s partnership organisations including Tate, the Arts Council Collection and Henry Moore Foundation, and spaces which will display the rest of Wakefield’s nationally-important collection of British art, spanning the 16th-Century to the present day.
Supporters are invited to be among the first to visit this groundbreaking new gallery – which opens on the 21st May – and to attend a special evening private view and reception with a talk by Director Simon Wallis.
