About Kamilah Ahmed and "Facets in Resonance"
Kamilah Ahmed is London-based multidisciplinary embroidery artist who explores heritage embroidery techniques through a contemporary lens. Her Arab Hall commission draws on the Bangladeshi tradition of Jamdani silk weaving, a technique she has used extensively in her practice, which sees embroidery and weaving happen simultaneously on the loom. In "Facets in Resonance" Jamdani becomes a canvas through which to explore the Arab Hall. The piece includes references to many of the different elements within the space, particularly the mashrabiya windows, which, like Jamdani, play with effects of light and air, and the brass gasolier, which suggested the sinuous form of the piece. By weaving these references into her own craft practice, Ahmed encourages viewers to reflect on the different craft traditions present in the Arab Hall: ‘in the Arab Hall it is easy to feel removed from the people who made all the different elements. Facets in Resonance is about encouraging visitors to engage more deeply with the space and feel connected to craft.’
