The gallery was founded in 1966 by the architect Trevor Green, with the aim of 'advancing the education of the general public in the modern visual arts’.

Modern Art Oxford comprises over 500 sqm of galleries, which are devoted to exploring the relevance of visual culture in society today. The programme is shaped by a belief in dialogue between contemporary art and ideas, and the relationship between artists and audiences.

Previous exhibitions have centred on many of the most notable artists of the last 50 years, such as Richard Long, Sol Le Witt, Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic, Carl Andre, Yoko Ono, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, Howard Hodgkin and Graham Sutherland.

In 2016, the gallery ran a highly successful Art Happens crowdfunding campaign to produce a collaborative publication celebrating 50 years of exhibitions and performances.
