This exhibition has now closed, find out what else is going on at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

A comprehensive history of British tattooing, this touring exhibition features over 400 original works, photographs and historic artefacts.

This exhibition tells a story that challenges longstanding myths and preconceptions about tattooing when it comes to class, gender and age, and at the same time celebrates the astonishingly rich heritage of tattooing as an art form in the UK.

While in Portsmouth, the exhibition will include additional artefacts specifically highlighting the significance and traditions of tattoos within the Royal Navy. For sailors, tattoos mapped journeys on the sea and through life; they were a biography on the body, symbolising where sailors travelled, what they did and who they loved.
