Lecture: A Careless Romance: Fashion and Fantasy in Van Dyck's Portraits of the English Court

Our glamorous image of the court of Charles I is largely the creation of his court painter, Sir Anthony van Dyck. This lecture discusses the different ways in which the great Flemish artist depicted the king, his family and entourage, and how he used fashion and fantasy to create a lost romantic world. Aileen Ribeiro is Professor of Art History at the Courtauld Institute, where she specialises in the history of dress. She is the author of Fashion and Fiction: Dress in Art and Literature in Stuart England.

A study visit to accompany this lecture will take place on Friday 20 April at the V&A.
