Located on the historic site of Derby Silk Mill, a key part of the industrial revolution, the Museum of Making celebrates innovation.
Taking a closer look at the city of Derby and surrounding areas, the focus here is on innovation and creativity, celebrating the rich history of invention in the area.
Developed in tandem with the city’s own industries and individuals, the museum re-opened in May 2021. The people of Derby have helped mould how the museum works for visitors. Over 1000 volunteers contributed to its transformation, from helping to move the collection to creating art installations and conserving the heritage building. The museum has a rolling programme of exhibitions, events, workshops and activities plus a museum shop and café.
From the world’s smallest engine run using a human hair, to a seven tonne Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine suspended in the atrium, there are 30,000 objects for the public to enjoy. The treasure trove of objects is displayed according to the materials each item was made from, enabling visitors to create their own bespoke journey through the collections.
The museum is partnered with Rolls Royce to inspire young people to become the next generation of technicians, engineers and problem solvers – the initiative helps young people improve their skills in science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.
Derby Museums, Museum of Making is a finalist for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022.
