First UK exhibition of paintings by the Austrian 19th-century artist Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.
Experience the first UK exhibition devoted to Austrian painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, focusing on his work as a landscapist. Featuring around 14 paintings from the Belvedere Museum, Vienna, alongside loans from the Liechtenstein Collection and Vienna Museum, the show explores Waldmüller’s meticulous observation of nature and his commitment to truth in painting.
Waldmüller, a leading figure of Austria’s Biedermeier period, combined academic training with a self-taught approach to landscape, influenced by Dutch 17th-century masters. The exhibition traces his development from early views of Vienna’s Prater park to the sunlit landscapes of Italy, highlighting his attention to light and colour.
