A collaborative exploration of Leeds Canal Basin’s industrial past and its contemporary urban transformation.
Confluence in Time brings together the work of painter and textile artist Rachel Morrell and photographer Walter Lewis in a collaborative exploration of change, continuity, and place. The exhibition focuses on the Leeds Canal Basin, examining the contrast between its nineteenth-century industrial heritage and its present-day regeneration as a northern hub for technology, finance, and creative industries.
Historically, the Basin marked the meeting point of the Leeds–Liverpool Canal and the Aire Navigation, forming a vital transport artery linking the Mersey and the Humber. This convergence fuelled prosperity in Leeds and West Yorkshire, until the arrival of the railway—dramatically set above the waterways on the Dark Arches—signalled the decline of canal trade.
Today, the Basin no longer represents industrial wealth through transport, yet it has been reimagined as a dynamic centre of contemporary urban life. Through layered imagery and material contrasts, Morrell and Lewis reflect on the social and cultural intersections that have always defined this evolving landscape, from bargees and labourers to office workers and visitors.
