Festivity in Romantic Poetry

Join UCL's Greg Dart for an evening of discussion about Romantic Festivity.

In 1817 Leigh Hunt complained that Christmas had become a 'dreary business'. But why? What were the causes of the Romantics' Christmas crisis? And how did they attempt to address it in their poetry? In this talk Gregory Dart will run through Romantic meditations on festivity, holidays and holydays, feasts and fasts, from Scott and Burns through Leigh Hunt, Letitia Landon and Wordsworth, to Keats, taking in the influence of the French Revolution, the Victory Celebrations of 1814, Malthus's theories of population and the antiquarian revival.
