Caroline Norton (1808-77) was a prolific author and editor, whose work was highly regarded during her lifetime.
Following a disastrous marriage, she also became an important campaigner for the rights of married women. Her work was instrumental in the passage of the Custody of Infants Act of 1839 and the Married Women’s Property Act of 1857.
One of her longest friendships was with the 6th Duke of Devonshire, and the Chatsworth Archives contain 59 of her unpublished letters.

Opening times
Chatsworth is open from mid-March to early January, and closed 24 - 26 December and 1 January. Art Pass discount is not valid from 1 November - early January during the Christmas exhibition.
The booking code for National Art Pass members is ARTFUNDCARDREQUIRED
The code must be entered in the coupon/promo code box on the billing information page, and will only work on one ticket in the basket. Each member will need to book individually to redeem the discount.
Members must present a valid Art Pass on arrival to validate their discounted entry ticket.
