Caroline Norton was an author, editor, and campaigner. Learn more about her life from her unpublished papers at Chatsworth.
Caroline Norton (1808-77) was a prolific author and editor, whose work was highly regarded during her lifetime.
Following a disastrous marriage, she also became an important campaigner for the rights of married women. Her work was instrumental in the passage of the Custody of Infants Act of 1839 and the Married Women’s Property Act of 1857.
One of her longest friendships was with the 6th Duke of Devonshire, and the Chatsworth Archives contain 59 of her unpublished letters.
In this talk, Fran Baker, Head of Archive and Library, explores some of the key themes which emerge from this important collection.
