Museum of the Year 2016 finalist

A contemporary art park and gallery, showcasing work by leading sculpture and land artists.

In 1999, art collectors Robert and Nicky Wilson moved into Bonnington House, a Jacobean manor set in a 100-acre estate. Nicky – a sculptor herself – had long dreamed of creating her own sculpture park, and with the couple’s connections to leading contemporary artists, they decided to open up the grounds as a space to show new work.

All the sculptures in the permanent collection were created in response to the landscape, the design and location chosen by the artist. They include work by eminent architect Charles Jencks, and artists Jim Lambie, Nathan Coley, Cornelia Parker, Anish Kapoor, Marc Quinn and Anthony Gormley.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the park, a new site-specific installation by Phyllida Barlow has been added to the collection, her first permanent commission outdoors. Quarry is a trio of sculptures made from concrete and steel with Barlow’s signature textural surfaces. It comprises two trunk-like columns which loom over the canopy, mimicking the oak and beech trees, and a mountainous flight of ruined steps.

The indoor spaces of Bonnington House are also open to the public, hosting temporary displays of sculptural work.

Jupiter Artland was a finalist for Museum of the Year in 2016.
