Breath is a solo exhibition of work by Dumfries and Galloway-based, mixed media and abstract artist Maggie Ayres.
Maggie's practice focuses on texture, light and mark making regardless of the materials she uses. In 2019, she started to consider the nature of breath and how air is shared among all living things. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic gave the notion of ‘breath’ an unexpected and altered significance for Maggie. Following a self-directed residency at Caerlaverock Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's site on the Solway coast in November of that year, close to her earliest childhood home, more visual connections arose for her.
Sketchbooks, photographs and field recordings fed and broadened the scope of her ideas dominated by the big sky, beguiling barnacle geese overwintering on the Merse and a surging sense of place.
