The most comprehensive exhibition of Fijian art ever assembled.

This is not a display of ‘ethnographic specimens’, asserts curator Professor Steven Hooper, who led a three-year research project into the presence of Fijian objects in international collections before bringing together this exhibition. Hooper says the items shown here should be thought of as works of art ‘in their own right’.

Over 270 fascinating and unusual pieces drawn from across the archipelago make for a convincing case. Highlights include elaborately-stencilled bark cloths, hand-crafted ivory jewellery, ritual pots and dishes, and an eight-metre long, double hulled sailing canoe made entirely from wood and coir cord. Watercolours and photographs provide additional context.
