The European debut of Lynch's dark and brooding images of derelict factories.
Shot in black and white in Germany, Poland, New York and England, Lynch's surreal images of decaying, disused and rundown buildings are characteristic of his famed cinematic style.
The theme of industrialisation has long been apparent in the filmmaker's work, with factory audio featuring in Eraserhead,The Elephant Man and Dune. In fact, it was while scouting for shooting locations that he began taking the factory photographs and as such, many of his images have the potential to be the setting of a story.
Printed on gelatin-silver paper, the texture of the works resembles the soot, vapours and fine dust that covered the surfaces depicted.The factories are also always set against the backdrop of winter, adding to the sense of melancholy and desolation.
Arranged thematically, the exhibition acts as a visual tour of the sites. Starting with architectural photographs of the buildings, it continues with interior shots featuring old machinery, metalwork, pipes and wires, before ending on pictures of the factories and their surroundings. The photographs are accompanied by sound works created by the artist.
