This work depicts Sir William Beauchamp-Proctor pointing towards Langley Hall, his Palladian mansion together with his wife Jane, Jane's sister and her husband Sir Nevil Hickman.

Wootton's compositions of country seats show a special sensitivity to the landscape gardening ideas of the time. The success of his country house portraits depended on his keen understanding of the relationship of the aristocracy to their estates.
