Fortepiano veneered in yew with gilt metal mounts, the keyboard is of ebony with bone facings to the accidentals.

Enamel plaque bears the inscription: 'Johann Schantz No 52 in Wien'. The compass is five octaves and a third (FF to a3). The piano is bichord, (two strings to a note) from FF to B1 flat, the rest is trichord. It has two bridges, an unusual feature for a Viennese instrument, two knee levers and a bassoon stop.
