Wyse was born in Glasgow and is an important figure in the Scottish Arts and Crafts Movement.

He was a founding member of the Scottish Guild for Handicraft and an influential art teacher. WyseÂ’s furniture is characterized by simple forms designed for practical everyday use which he enlivened by painted decoration, in this case gesso panels with Scottish rose motifs. Stylistically it invites comparison with the work of WyseÂ’s Glasgow Style contemporaries, Rennie Mackintosh and the Macdonalds. The cabinet will initially be a highlight on the themed public tours of the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre and then offers excellent display and interpretation possibilities in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
