This characteristic example of Constable's landscape drawing in black chalk shows a wooded landscape, probably at Dedham.
In its rhythm and large handling the work carries on the tradition of Gainsborough. It is full of light, and the subtly-graded half-tones are largely achieved by the use of the stump.
