Spread across 21 galleries, Aberdeen Art Gallery houses a range of works spanning several centuries, with a focus on the work of local artists.

The handsome granite building that is home to Aberdeen Art Gallery was originally designed by A Marshall Mackenzie, opening for the first time in 1885. After a major redevelopment completed in 2019, the new space features 21 galleries, including a rooftop gallery and a community gallery.

Diverse art collection

Comprising paintings, sculpture and graphics, the collection spans from the 15th century to the present day, and includes 18th-century portraits, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces and powerful 20th-century and contemporary works.

Local artists

The gallery celebrates the work of artists from Aberdeen, such as a significant collection of enamel jewellery by James Cromer Watt (1862-1940) and the largest collection of outfits by fashion designer Bill Gibb (1943-88). These sit alongside works by renowned Scottish artists such as Joan Eardley, and the Scottish Colourists, a group of early 20th-century painters celebrated for their vibrant use of colour.

Modern and contemporary

Aberdeen Art Gallery prides itself on actively acquiring contemporary art. The gallery features works by prominent modern and contemporary artists including Tracey Emin, Francis Bacon and Barbara Hepworth.

In addition to the art exhibits, the gallery also features the Cowdray Hall, a concert venue, and the Remembrance Hall. With its exceptional collection, and commitment to showcasing a variety of artistic movements, the gallery is a true gem of Aberdeen, where you can even enjoy specially-curated playlists inspired by the collections.
