Jane Tudge’s BECOMING at Canwood Gallery uses photos and sculptures to explore nature's fleeting growth, care and change.

Canwood Gallery presents BECOMING, a solo exhibition by Jane Tudge, opening June 2026.

BECOMING began with a single infant robe and a simple, resonant wish, that we might grow in closer balance with the natural world. From this starting point, Tudge’s practice unfolds as an attentive response to growth, care and transformation, shaped by the seasonal rhythms of a country garden on the Herefordshire and Worcestershire border.

Influenced by the sense of movement and emergence found in Botticelli’s Primavera, Tudge’s work captures metamorphosis as it happens, a flower opening, a seed head drying, a sudden shift in light. These are not acts of formal documentation, but moments of noticing. Each photograph is titled with the precise date and time of its making, anchoring the image within a wider cycle of change and underscoring the fleeting nature of growth.

Alongside the photographic works, the exhibition includes a series of ephemeral sculptures formed from found textiles and materials gathered from the garden itself. These tactile, quietly provisional forms reflect an intuitive way of working, shaped by what is available in the moment and guided by close observation of the landscape as it changes through the seasons.

Also to be encountered is a new experiential installation, NEST, that gently dissolves the boundary between viewer and artwork. Visitors are invited to enter the space, to slow down, gather and dwell. Nest offers a place of pause and reflection, exploring universal ideas of shelter, care, protection and belonging.

BECOMING is an exhibition about attentiveness, about learning to notice the small shifts that shape larger transformations. It invites visitors to consider growth not as a fixed destination, but as an ongoing, relational process, one rooted in time, place and the natural world.
