Revealing the literary risk-taking and collaboration behind a famed modernist writer.
The writer Virginia Woolf was also an innovative publisher who created the Hogarth Press in 1917 as a venture from her living room.
Bringing together hand-printed books, illustrated editions and works conceived through close collaboration, the exhibition reframes publishing as a creative practice. Along with her husband Leonard, Woolf learned to set type, operate the press and bind books by hand, working closely with artists including her sister Vanessa Bell to produce distinctive and visually ambitious publications of literature and art others were unwilling to publish.
