Revealing how Egypt influenced British design for over two centuries.
Tracing the evolution of this style from the Georgian era through the Industrial Revolution to contemporary architecture, Egypt: Influencing British Design reveals how a fascination with the monuments, hieroglyphs and aesthetics of ancient Egypt has shaped homes, public spaces and imaginations alike in Britain.
Set within the Sir John Soane Museum, this exhibition explores the enduring fascination with Egyptian style through Soane’s own collection of drawings, books and decorative objects. New work by Cairo-born artist Sara Sallam responds to the Sarcophagus of Pharaoh Seti I, while her accompanying handmade book, A Tourist Handbook for Egypt Outside of Egypt (Volume II: London), traces Egypt’s continuing influence on London’s streets and interiors.
