Meet the contemporary artist delving into the seductive and destructive power of oil.
In a major solo commission at the ICA, Tanoa Sasraku explores the seductive and destructive power of oil and its entanglement with war, nationalism and memory.
Morale Patch brings together new works on paper, found objects and sculpture. At its heart is a striking installation of corporate paperweights produced by oil companies, each encasing a fragment of crude oil from extraction sites around the world. Repurposed into a monumental tiled display, they become emblems of pride and empire.
Elsewhere, UV-printed works on paper transform military ribbons and flags into fading symbols, while new sculptures echo miniature coffins draped in national banners. Across these hybrid works of art, Sasraku examines the history behind these materials, informed by her personal relationship to textiles and patternmaking.
