Expanding Landscapes: Painting After Land Art is an exhibition that brings together historical works and contemporary artists.

Engaging with nature and observing our relationship with the landscape around us has been a common theme in painting since Romanticism, with many artists taking inspiration from the Lake District such as J.M.W Turner who explored light, time, and the forces of weather through his work.

The exhibition follows the romantic motifs of earth, sea and sky through a variety of materials and processes including the use of earth pigment from specific locations.

Don’t miss Andy Goldsworthy’s Blencathra Mountain, Cumbria, 19 February 1988, the heart of the exhibition and a work that echoes Romantic painting through natural materials and photography.

Works by artists associated with Land Art including works by Nancy Holt, Helene Appel, Hannah Brown, Sam Douglas, Ingrid Pollard, Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson will be on show.
