Guercino’s King David and three sibyls to be united for the first time
In 2024, Waddesdon Manor will showcase four paintings by renowned Bolognese artist Guercino, including King David (1651) from its collection, as well as three sibyls (female prophets from antiquity, all 1951) on loan from the National Gallery and the Royal Collection.
Originally commissioned as pairs, King David and The Cumaean Sibyl were separated when the latter was purchased by a Medici prince, leading to the creation of The Samean Sibyl as a replacement. This exhibition marks the first time the intended pair and its replacement will be displayed together, along with a third sibyl in the form of the Libyan Sibyl.
