Join us to celebrate the launch of our two new summer season exhibitions, Augustas Serapinas: Physical Culture and Chico da Silva: And the soul is for the birds.
Augustas Serapinas' exhibition will invite audiences into a hybrid space of activity - performance space; drawing studio; and gym - featuring fully operational metal fitness machines with jesmonite sculptures replacing conventional weights. The work will be activated with a dynamic live programme punctuating the exhibition season; where local fitness groups will be invited to participate in exercise classes in the galleries; students from local universities will be invited to partake in life drawing classes; and community wellbeing groups will be invited to host mixed ability sessions and holistic workshops.
Chico’s paintings are a glimpse into an immense non-hierarchical cosmology that was fuelled by the artist’s own imagination, mythology and folklore. Depicting sea creatures swimming on the currents of outer space, and fantastical creatures vividly painted in hallucinatory battles or stretching their jaws agape to consume smaller creatures, Chico’s works call attention to the interconnectedness of everything.
Party the night away with music in our café bar from Revenge of Calculon and DJ Tano, alongside delicious food and drink.
Funkatronic Luchadors Revenge of Calculon dominate the dirty synth and sleazy bass groove world. If you like your Sci-Fi Funk wrapped up in a neat bundle by two guys wearing tracksuits and Mexican wrestling masks, this is the band for you.
Tano is a Uruguayan DJ based in Nottingham. His sound constantly shifts from afro-latin, breaks, garage, sambass and more.
This exhibition launch, like all our programme, is free admission for all but donations are both encouraged and needed. As a registered charity, every donation – no matter the size – makes a big difference. Suggested donation £5. Thank you.
