Join July Styles, Fitness and Wellbeing Coaching Specialist, for a walkthrough of Physical Culture by Augustas Serapinas. July will talk about their practice as a trauma informed women's coaching specialist and a certified strength and conditioning coach in relation to Physical Culture - the first institutional solo exhibition in England by Lithuanian artist Augustas Serapinas.
This large scale sculptural installation invites audiences into a hybrid space of activity - performance space; drawing studio; and gym - featuring fully operational metal fitness machines with jesmonite sculptures replacing conventional weights. Regularly activated by work-out clubs and student life drawing groups throughout the duration of the exhibition, Physical Culture offers a structure in which the audience is encouraged to reread and challenge Western art history through embodied engagement, investigate the dominant theoretical and physical methodologies within arts education, and question the broader collective cultural memory that often structure Western societies.
