Join our curators and special guest Colin Wiggins for a series of thought-provoking art history lectures.
In this session, Homage: Tracing Artistic Lineage, Pallant House Gallery curator Miriam O’Connor Perks will explore the theme of homage in portraiture, focusing on how artists featured in the exhibition pay tribute to those who came before them—through style, subject, and subtle visual reference.
Colin Wiggins, artist and former Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery, will reflect on how contemporary artists respond to historic collections, drawing on his long-standing work with artists-in-residence at the National Gallery to reveal how the past continues to inspire and shape new artistic voices.
Artists have always looked to the past for ideas and inspiration. Colin will look at some of the exciting responses to the National Gallery’s collection by artists such as Paula Rego and Michael Landy, or Peter Blake and Bridget Riley. As Frank Auerbach once put it: ‘This is the family from which we spring.’
