Examines a range of material as a guide to population numbers,  and to social and political organisation in Dál Riata.

Starting from the well-known seventh-century text the Senchus Fer nAlban, which provides a military census of the kingdom of Dál Riata and provides some unique demographic and logistical information, the paper will move out to look at comparable, though less complete material from elsewhere in Britain and Ireland and ask whether such material is a useful guide to population numbers, and to social and political organisation.

About the speaker:

Alex Woolf is the professor of medieval Studies at the University of St Andrews, he has degrees in Medieval History, Medieval English and Archaeology from the University of Sheffield and was awarded a doctorate by portfolio in the subject of “Politics and Identity in Early Medieval Scotland’. He has published widely on topics ranging from Roman Britain to Icelandic literature but is perhaps best known for his book From Pictland to Alba, Scotland 789-1070. He lives in the Howe of Fife.
