Examines a range of material as a guide to population numbers, and to social and political organisation in Dál Riata.
Starting from the well-known seventh-century text the Senchus Fer nAlban, which provides a military census of the kingdom of Dál Riata and provides some unique demographic and logistical information, the paper will move out to look at comparable, though less complete material from elsewhere in Britain and Ireland and ask whether such material is a useful guide to population numbers, and to social and political organisation.
