The National Maritime Museum celebrates the reopening of Ocean Court with a season of ocean-themed events and exhibitions.
The National Maritime Museum is celebrating the reopening of Ocean Court with a season of ocean-themed events and exhibitions. Reopening on 7 June to mark World Ocean Day, the revamped central space will feature a striking new Ocean Map based on the Spilhaus Projection, offering a fresh ocean-centric view of the world that highlights key features like the Mariana Trench and Great Barrier Reef. Visitors can explore new displays including a fragment of the MV Sea Empress—a reminder of the devastating impact of oil spills—and the binnacle from Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior, sunk in 1985 while protesting nuclear testing.
The reopening kicks off a packed summer programme for families, including the World Ocean Day Festival and Ready Steady Sail! These events celebrate the ocean’s vital role in our climate, history, and culture, and invite visitors to see our “watery planet” from a bold new perspective.
