How can you make your first move as an artist with limited resources? Join artist and filmmaker Dorothy Cheung on this exploratory journey to create your first moving image with a DIY approach. The workshop will cover essential tips for shooting and editing, playful ways to work with your footage, free online and community resources, and potential means to share your work.

In recent years, moving images have become an accessible medium for artists of various practices. However, taking your first steps into this realm can feel daunting.

Dorothy will kick things off by speaking to her own artistic and filmmaking practice, the process that she goes through when making a film and its essence in moving images.

She will then share with you the top tips, tricks for shooting and video editing, and things to keep in mind when approaching moving images. You will have the chance to explore playful ways to work with your footage, gain access to free online and community resources, and learn more about potential means to share your work.

This workshop isn’t designed to be prescriptive as everyone has their own style of creating moving images which will come through the more you practice! But we want this to be a low-stakes, playful, and experimental space where we can learn by doing and explore different approaches to film making, under the guidance of Dorothy’s expertise. In this workshop you will:

Dorothy Cheung is an artist and filmmaker with Hong Kong heritage. Her work explores identity and home from personal and political perspectives, examining themes of memory and forgetfulness.

She created her first film in 2017 using an old Canon camera rented from her school and a basic tripod, which she still uses today. This film and her other projects made on a low budget have been selected for screening at various festivals and galleries, both locally and internationally. Notable showcases include the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, South Taiwan Film Festival, and Queer East.

In addition to filmmaking, Dorothy is also a researcher and translator, collaborating with academic institutions and museums.
