Description:
Kate Downie has spent the last 20 years exploring an artistic vision for the extremes of both the Scottish urban/industrial landscape as well as the more isolated coastal places, as in this work, which depicts an island covered with black and white birds. This work was made when the artist set up a studio in the remote peninsular of Old Slains. The artist describes the work as about 'the calligraphy of erosion' - the coastline is not a fixed entity but as fragile and open to change as our society and social identity.
