Painted for the sitter; thence by descent through the Dalrymple family, Newhailes, East Lothian.

Description:
An informal three quarter length portrait of Sir James Dalrymple (1692-1751) in situ in the dining room at Newhailes shortly before James Norie the Elder painted the room in 1739. The sitter was Auditor of the Court of Exchequer in Scotland. Part of a grant for 4 portraits.
