Brooch

Artist: Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833 - 1898), made by Child & Child

Location: Victoria and Albert Museum

Date: 1889 - 1891

Materials: gold, ivory and citrine

Dimensions: 3 x 4 x 1 cm

Gift:

Review number: 4777 (1999)

Provenance:
Purchased without attribution at Olympia fair, London, June 1986

Description:
In the form of a marguerite flower with green petals made from stained ivory and yellow centre of citrine. Its form as a marguerite is probably a play on the name of the artist's daughter Margaret, who preferred stained ivory to any precious stone. The floor tiles depicted in his painting 'Sleeping Princess in the Briar Rose' are laid out in the same pattern as the petals of the brooch.
