James Jeffreys (1751 - 1784)

National Portrait Gallery

This head and shoulders portrait, in an interrupted circle, shows the subject seated to the left at a table, looking round in half-profile at the spectator. He has long, curling hair and wears a fantastic costume. His right hand, which holds a porte-crayon, rests on a drawing, possibly of The Massacre of the Innocents. At the back of the table are several books whose titles and authors are visible.
