The painting illustrates Henry IV, part I , act III, sc I. John Philip Kemble sat for Hotspur and Glendower. It was engraved by Rhodes in 1803 for George Steeven's edition of Shakespeare illustrated by Fuseli and published in 1805. One of 26 gifts to 19 museums by Sir Alec Martin or Sir Alec and Lady Martin through The Art Fund between 1935 and 1967.
