Filippo Negroli and brothers of Milan

Fitzwilliam Museum

circa 1540 - 1545

The visor of this helmet is modelled in the form of a lion's mask; the skull is embossed with allegorical figures of Fame (right) and Victory (left) and trophies in the style of the High Renaissance. There is a Greek motto inlaid in gold on the comb. The chinpiece is missing. The helmet is likely to have had a distinguished original owner, as Negroli worked for both the Emperor Charves V and his son.
