Whitworth Art Gallery

2007

This work is a textile installation of eight banners and 74 hemp-wrapped and indigo-dyed balls, designed with the Whitworth's Sculpture Court in mind and commissioned for the Whitworth's major touring exhibition Indigo: a blue to dye for (2007). Shindo is one of Japan's leading textile artists and his work is well represented in international museums but this is the first time his work has been acquired by a British museum. His work with natural indigo represents a classic Japanese synthesis of traditional and contemporary. It also uses architectural space in a way that has become closely associated with Japanese textile art. The Whitworth has been developing a collection of contemporary textile art since 1990 and began to extend this into the international arena 2-3 years ago.
